1952 Egyptian revolution

23 July 1952

The 1952 Egyptian revolution was a military coup carried out by a group called the Free Officers, led by Muhammad Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser, which overthrew King Farouk and ended the rule of the dynasty founded by Muhammad Ali. Resentment of the monarchy, of British influence and of the defeat in the 1948 war had grown, and the burning of Cairo earlier in the year had shown the government's weakness. Farouk abdicated in favour of his infant son and went into exile. The monarchy was abolished the following year, and Egypt became a republic with Naguib as president, but Nasser soon took power, and went on to nationalise the Suez Canal and to become a leading figure in the Arab world.
