Birth of Rama X of Thailand

28 July 1952

Rama X of Thailand was born on 28 July 1952 in Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall. King of Thailand, known by the royal name Vajiralongkorn, Rama X succeeded his father Bhumibol Adulyadej, who had reigned for seventy years. Educated in Britain and Australia, he trained as a military officer and pilot and served in the army, and he was named crown prince in 1972. He took the throne in 2016 and was formally crowned in 2019 in an elaborate ceremony. His reign has seen mass pro-democracy protests, some of which called for reform of the monarchy, and a law against insulting the monarchy that has been widely used. He spent considerable time in Germany.
