Construction of Tokyo International Airport

1 July 1952

Tokyo International Airport, widely known as Haneda, is one of the two main airports serving the Japanese capital, located on the shore of Tokyo Bay. It began as a small airfield in 1931, and was taken over by the American forces during the occupation after the Second World War, then returned to Japan in 1952, when it began to operate as a civil airport. For many years it was Japan's main international gateway, until Narita Airport opened in 1978 and took over international flights. Haneda was then used mainly for domestic flights, though in recent years it has again been opened to more international services. It is one of the busiest airports in the world and is connected to the center of Tokyo by monorail and train.
