The Yugoslav Wars were a series of connected conflicts that accompanied the breakup of Yugoslavia. They began in 1991 with a brief fight in Slovenia and the war in Croatia, and spread to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the fighting from 1992 to 1995 was the worst and included the siege of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica genocide. Later came the conflict in Kosovo, ended by a NATO air campaign in 1999, and a smaller insurgency in North Macedonia in 2001. The wars were marked by ethnic cleansing, mass killings and the displacement of millions of people. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was set up to try those responsible.
