The Croatian War of Independence was fought between Croatia and Serb forces backed by the Yugoslav People's Army, after Croatia declared independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. Local Serbs in areas such as Krajina and Eastern Slavonia, supported from Belgrade, rejected Croatian rule and declared their own territories. The conflict included the siege and destruction of the city of Vukovar and the shelling of Dubrovnik, and many people were expelled from their homes. Croatian forces recaptured most of the occupied areas in Operation Storm in the summer of 1995. The last Serb-held region, Eastern Slavonia, was returned to Croatia peacefully in the late 1990s.
