On 20 September 1973, in the Houston Astrodome before more than 30,000 spectators and an estimated 90 million television viewers, the 29-year-old women's champion Billie Jean King defeated the 55-year-old former Wimbledon champion Bobby Riggs, who had boasted that women's tennis was inferior and that a man of his age could beat any woman, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. King, who had founded the Women's Tennis Association that year and fought for equal prize money, said she felt that she had to win to boost the cause. The match was a landmark in the women's rights movement, and in 1973 the US Open became the first major to pay men and women equally.
