The Bosphorus Bridge, officially the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, spans the Bosphorus strait in Istanbul and links the European and Asian sides of the city. It was the first fixed crossing of the strait and opened at the end of October 1973, on the fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish Republic. A suspension bridge with a main span of more than a kilometre, it was designed by British engineers and was among the longest of its kind when completed. It carries motorway traffic and is a major route for commuters, though it was long closed to pedestrians except on special occasions. It was renamed in 2016 after the failed coup attempt of 15 July.
