Nursultan Nazarbayev was born on 6 July 1940 in Shamalgan. A Kazakh politician, Nazarbayev was the first president of independent Kazakhstan, ruling from the collapse of the Soviet Union until he resigned in 2019. A former steelworker and Communist Party official, he led the country as it gave up its Soviet nuclear arsenal, developed its oil and gas sector and moved the capital from Almaty to Astana, a city later named in his honor. He maintained a balanced foreign policy between Russia, China and the West. His rule was criticized for authoritarian practices, and after violent unrest in January 2022 he lost much of his remaining influence.
