The tomb of the Lord of Sipan is found

1987

In 1987 the Peruvian archaeologist Walter Alva, alerted by a raid of grave robbers who had looted gold objects at a mud-brick pyramid at Huaca Rajada near Sipan on the north coast of Peru, discovered an unplundered royal tomb of the Moche civilisation, from about 250 AD. A warrior-priest, the Lord of Sipan, lay in a wooden coffin with a headdress and ornaments of gold, silver and turquoise, necklaces of gold and silver peanuts, and a ceremonial rattle, surrounded by sacrificed attendants, a dog and llamas. It was the richest tomb ever found in the Americas by archaeologists and showed the wealth and ritual life of the Moche.
