Construction of London City Airport

1987

London City Airport is a small airport in the Royal Docks area of east London, on the north bank of the Thames, only a few kilometres from the financial districts of Canary Wharf and the City. It was built on a dock peninsula as part of the redevelopment of London's Docklands, and was planned for short take-off and landing aircraft. Because of its short runway and steep approach, only smaller aircraft can use it, and it caters mainly to business travellers on services to European cities and to some leisure destinations. Its location has led to controversy among nearby residents over noise, and over plans for expansion. It is linked to the centre by the Docklands Light Railway.
