Death of Andy Warhol

22 February 1987

Andy Warhol died on 22 February 1987 in Manhattan, aged 58. An American artist and a leading figure of pop art, Warhol began as a commercial illustrator in New York before turning to paintings based on advertising and celebrity. His Campbell's Soup Cans and silkscreen portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, made in the early 1960s, blurred the line between fine art and mass culture. He ran a studio called the Factory, made experimental films, managed the band The Velvet Underground and founded Interview magazine. He survived being shot by Valerie Solanas in 1968. His ideas about fame, repetition and the art market still shape contemporary art.
