Founding of Saint Kitts and Nevis

27 February 1967

Saint Kitts and Nevis became a self-governing state in association with the United Kingdom, taking control of its internal affairs while Britain remained responsible for defence and foreign relations. The island of Saint Kitts was the first Caribbean island settled by the English, in 1624, under Thomas Warner, and it also hosted an early French colony. Sugar plantations worked by enslaved Africans dominated the economy for centuries. Anguilla, which had been grouped with the two islands, rebelled against rule from Saint Kitts and eventually became a separate British territory. Robert Bradshaw, a trade union leader, became the first premier. Full independence was reached in 1983, and the federation is today the smallest sovereign state in the Americas by area and population.
