On 18 September 1960, the 9th International Stoke Mandeville Games opened in Rome, a week after the end of the Olympic Games, and are now recognised as the first Paralympic Games. About 400 wheelchair athletes from 23 countries competed in archery, athletics, swimming, table tennis, snooker and other events, and were received by Pope John XXIII. The Winter Paralympics started in 1976, and in 1988 in Seoul the Games began to use the same facilities as the Olympics. The 2024 Games in Paris had about 4,400 athletes.
