Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport is the main international airport of Rome, on the coast about thirty kilometers southwest of the city. It was opened in the early 1960s, in time for the Rome Olympic Games, and replaced Ciampino as the principal airport for intercontinental flights. It has since been expanded with several terminals and is the largest airport in Italy and the hub of Alitalia, and later of ITA Airways. The airport is named after the Renaissance polymath Leonardo da Vinci. A rail link connects it to the center of Rome.
