1960 United States presidential election

8 November 1960

The 1960 United States presidential election was one of the closest of the twentieth century, between the Democratic senator John F. Kennedy and Republican Vice President Richard Nixon. The campaign included the first televised presidential debates, in which Kennedy's calm appearance helped him with the large television audience, though radio listeners reportedly judged the contest differently. Kennedy won by a very narrow margin in the popular vote and a clearer one in the Electoral College, helped by his running mate Lyndon Johnson in Southern states. At 43 he became the youngest person elected president and the first Roman Catholic. Religion and the economy were major issues.
