War in Abkhazia

from 14 August 1992 to 27 September 1993

The War in Abkhazia was fought between the government of Georgia and Abkhaz separatists in the region of Abkhazia, on the Black Sea coast, after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Abkhaz forces, aided by Russian military support and by volunteers from the North Caucasus, drove Georgian troops from most of the territory. The Abkhaz captured the capital Sukhumi in 1993, after a ceasefire collapsed, and several hundred thousand ethnic Georgians fled or were expelled, with serious abuses reported on both sides. A ceasefire left Abkhazia as a de facto independent region, backed by Russia, which recognised it in 2008 after the war with Georgia. The conflict remains unresolved, and the displaced have not been able to return.
