Mongol Empire

from 1206 to 1368

The Mongol Empire arose in 1206, when the steppe chieftain Temujin was proclaimed Genghis Khan at a great assembly of the Mongol tribes. Using a highly mobile cavalry army and strict discipline, the Mongols conquered an enormous area, eventually reaching from Korea and China to Persia, Russia and Eastern Europe, and forming the largest contiguous land empire in history. Their campaigns brought great destruction to cities that resisted, but under the Pax Mongolica trade and communication along the Silk Road flourished. After Genghis Khan's death the empire was divided among his descendants into khanates, including the Golden Horde, the Ilkhanate and the Yuan dynasty in China. The Yuan was overthrown by the Ming in 1368, which is the usual end date for the empire.
