Hijra

from 13 September 622 CE to 27 September 622 CE

The Hijra was the migration of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from Mecca to the oasis city of Yathrib, later known as Medina. Facing persecution from the leading Meccan clans and a plot against his life, Muhammad left in secret with his companion Abu Bakr and reached Medina after a journey of about two weeks, where he was welcomed and became the leader of a new community. In Medina the early Muslim community was organised under an agreement known as the Constitution of Medina. The event was so significant that the Islamic calendar, which was introduced under the caliph Umar some years later, counts its years from the Hijra, with year one beginning in 622.
