Quba Mosque in Medina is regarded as the first mosque in Islam. According to tradition, the Prophet Muhammad founded it in the village of Quba, on the outskirts of the city, when he arrived there after the Hijra, his migration from Mecca in 622, and he took part in building it. The mosque has been renovated and enlarged many times over the centuries, most extensively in the 20th century under Saudi rule, when a modern building replaced much of the old structure. Muslims regard a prayer there as especially rewarding, and visiting it is a common part of a pilgrimage to Medina.
