Aisha was born in 614 CE in Mecca. A wife of the Prophet Muhammad, Aisha was the daughter of Abu Bakr, the first caliph. She is remembered in Islamic tradition as a source of many hadiths, reports on Muhammad's sayings and conduct, and as a teacher of knowledge to the early community, whom the companions consulted on matters of law. After Muhammad's death she was an influential figure, and she opposed Ali's caliphate, leading an army against him at the Battle of the Camel, where she was defeated. She spent her last years in Medina. Her place in Islamic history is viewed differently among Sunni and Shia traditions.
