1992 Los Angeles riots

from 29 April 1992 to 4 May 1992

The 1992 Los Angeles riots began after a jury in a suburb of the city acquitted four police officers of using excessive force in the beating of Rodney King, a Black motorist, which had been filmed by a bystander and widely broadcast. Protests turned into days of looting, arson and violence, especially in South Central Los Angeles. Stores, many owned by Korean Americans, were burned, and the trucker Reginald Denny was pulled from his vehicle and beaten. Dozens of people died, and damage ran to hundreds of millions of dollars. The National Guard and federal troops were deployed to restore order. The unrest drew attention to racial tension, economic inequality and police practices in American cities.
