Hitler becomes Chancellor of Germany

30 January 1933

On 30 January 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolf Hitler, leader of the Nazi Party, as Chancellor of Germany, advised by conservative politicians, such as Franz von Papen, who believed they could control him. A month later the Reichstag fire gave a pretext for decrees suspending civil liberties, and in March the Enabling Act gave Hitler the power to rule by decree. Opposition parties were banned by July. When Hindenburg died in August 1934, Hitler merged the offices of chancellor and president, as Fuhrer. The regime embarked on rearmament, persecution of Jews and war.
