Roswell incident

July 1947

The Roswell incident refers to the discovery of debris on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, which the local army air field first described in a press release as a crashed flying disc. The army quickly corrected the statement, saying that it was a weather balloon, and the story faded for decades. It was revived in the 1980s by UFO researchers who alleged a cover-up of an extraterrestrial craft. In the 1990s the US Air Force published reports explaining that the debris came from Project Mogul, a secret programme using high-altitude balloons to detect Soviet nuclear tests, and that the reports of alien bodies came from later events and crash-test dummies. Roswell remains a symbol of UFO folklore.
