Shirin Ebadi was born on 21 June 1947 in Hamadan. An Iranian lawyer and human rights activist, Ebadi was one of the first women judges in Iran, and presided over a court in Tehran until the 1979 revolution, after which women were barred from the role. She then became a lawyer and campaigned for the rights of women and children, and defended political prisoners and dissidents. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, the first Iranian and the first Muslim woman to be so honored. After increasing government pressure, she left Iran in 2009 and has lived in exile in London, while continuing her advocacy.
