Publication of Diary of Anne Frank

25 June 1947

The book is based on the diary kept by the Jewish teenager Anne Frank while she hid with her family and four others in the secret annex of an Amsterdam office building during the German occupation of the Netherlands. The group was betrayed and arrested in August 1944, and Anne died in the Bergen-Belsen camp in early 1945. Her father Otto, the only survivor of the group, edited her notebooks and had them published in Dutch as Het Achterhuis, meaning The Secret Annex. Later translations, beginning with an English edition, made it one of the best-known testimonies of the Holocaust, and it has appeared in dozens of languages.
