Welwyn Garden City in Hertfordshire was founded as the second garden city in England, following Letchworth. It was inspired by the ideas of Ebenezer Howard, who proposed self-contained towns that combined the benefits of urban jobs and rural surroundings, with green space, planned industry and housing for all classes. The company behind it was led by Howard himself, and the town plan was drawn up by the architect Louis de Soissons in a neo-Georgian style. Industries such as Shredded Wheat and later pharmaceutical firms helped make it a working town rather than a mere suburb. After the Second World War it was designated a new town, and it served as an example for later planned communities.
