Cagliari Calcio is the main football club of Sardinia, based in the island's capital, Cagliari. It was founded in 1920 and spent its early decades in the lower divisions. Its golden age came in the late 1960s, led by the forward Luigi Riva, known as Gigi Riva, who was the league's top scorer several times and became Italy's all-time leading scorer. With a team built largely from local talent and a few foreign recruits, Cagliari won the Serie A title in 1969 and 1970, the only national championship in its history, which made it a symbol of pride for an island that felt distant from the Italian mainland. The club has since moved between Serie A and Serie B.
