Rise of Houthis

1994

The Houthis, officially known as Ansar Allah, are a Zaydi Shia movement from the Saada region of northern Yemen. They grew out of a religious revival group in the 1990s and became a political and armed force under Hussein al-Houthi, who was killed by government forces in 2004. They then fought several rounds of conflict against the Yemeni government. In 2014 they took control of the capital Sanaa, which led to a Saudi-led military intervention in 2015 and a long civil war. Since 2023 they have attacked shipping in the Red Sea, and they remain in control of much of northern Yemen.
