Release of Opera

1994

Opera is a web browser developed by the Norwegian company Opera Software. It started in 1994 as a research project at the telephone company Telenor, and two of its creators, Jon von Tetzchner and Geir Ivarsoy, founded Opera Software the following year to develop it. The browser introduced or popularised several features that later became standard, such as tabbed browsing, speed dial and pop-up blocking. For many years it used its own engine, and in 2013 it moved to the Chromium-based engine also used by Google Chrome. Opera was strong on mobile phones with Opera Mini, which compressed web pages, and the company was sold to a consortium of Chinese investors in 2016.
