Release of Yahoo

January 1994

Yahoo began as a directory of favourite websites compiled by the Stanford graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo, originally under the name Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web. It was soon renamed Yahoo and grew into a web portal with a search engine, email, news and other services, becoming one of the most visited sites of the dot-com era. The company was incorporated in 1995 and went public in 1996. It lost ground to Google and other rivals in the 2000s, and its core internet business was sold to Verizon in 2017.
