Rise of COBRA

from 8 November 1948 to 1 January 1951

COBRA was a European avant-garde art movement formed in Paris by artists from Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, the cities that supplied the letters of its name. Its leading figures included Asger Jorn, Christian Dotremont, Constant, Karel Appel and Corneille. The group rejected the rationalism of geometric abstraction and the control of Surrealism by Parisian theorists, and it embraced spontaneity, bright colours and the raw expressiveness of children's drawings, folk art and primitive art. Its exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam provoked a scandal and caused heated debate. COBRA dissolved after only a few years, but its members continued to be influential in post-war European painting.
