Hassan Rouhani was born on 12 November 1948 in Sorkheh. An Iranian cleric and politician, Rouhani was president of Iran from 2013 to 2021. A moderate and pragmatist, he had been Iran's chief nuclear negotiator and secretary of the Supreme National Security Council before winning the presidency on promises of engagement with the world. His government negotiated the 2015 nuclear agreement with world powers, which lifted many sanctions, but the United States withdrew from it in 2018 and reimposed pressure. His presidency was marked by economic difficulties and protests, and he was barred from running for the Assembly of Experts in 2024.
