The American Indian Movement was founded in Minneapolis by Native American activists, among them Dennis Banks, Clyde Bellecourt and George Mitchell, to confront police harassment of Native people in the city and to fight poverty and discrimination. It soon became a national organization, demanding that the United States honor its treaties with Indigenous nations and respect their sovereignty. It took part in high-profile actions, including the Trail of Broken Treaties march on Washington in 1972 and the occupation of Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota in 1973, which led to a standoff with federal forces lasting more than two months. Its actions raised the profile of Native rights but also led to violent conflicts and divisions.
