Intel is an American technology company, best known for manufacturing microprocessors. It was founded in the summer of 1968 by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, who had left Fairchild Semiconductor, and Andy Grove joined soon afterwards. The company first made memory chips but turned to microprocessors with the 4004 in 1971 and became the dominant maker of processors for personal computers after IBM chose its chips for the IBM PC, with the Intel Inside campaign making the brand famous. In the 2010s it fell behind in manufacturing technology and missed the market for mobile devices, and it faced stiffer competition from rivals such as AMD and from chip foundries in Asia.
