Release of OpenOffice.org

2002

OpenOffice.org was a free and open-source office suite, containing a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation program, drawing tool and database, that was developed from the source code of the commercial StarOffice, which Sun Microsystems released in 2000. It was designed as a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and version 1.0 was published in 2002. It introduced the OpenDocument format, which became an ISO standard. After Oracle acquired Sun, many developers left and formed The Document Foundation, which created the LibreOffice fork in 2010. Oracle later donated OpenOffice to the Apache Software Foundation, where it continues as Apache OpenOffice, while LibreOffice became the more actively developed project.
