Creation of Haiku

2002

Haiku is a free and open-source operating system inspired by BeOS, a system developed in the 1990s by Be Inc. that was admired for its speed and responsiveness with multimedia. After Be Inc. collapsed and BeOS was discontinued, a group of enthusiasts began a project to recreate it from scratch, at first under the name OpenBeOS, and later renamed Haiku. The system is designed to be compatible with BeOS applications, and features a clean desktop, a fast file system with indexed attributes, and a modular design. Its development has been slow, since it is a volunteer effort, but it reached its first stable release series in the late 2010s, and it is used by hobbyists and developers.
