Creation of Fedora Linux

2002

Fedora Linux is a Linux distribution supported by the Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat. Its roots go to a volunteer project begun in 2002 by Warren Togami to provide extra, high-quality software packages for Red Hat Linux. In 2003 Red Hat discontinued its own boxed Red Hat Linux product and merged the volunteer effort into the Fedora Project, which produced the first release as Fedora Core in November 2003. Fedora offers recent software and quickly adopts new technologies, and it serves as a testing ground for features that later appear in Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It uses the RPM package format and has GNOME as its default desktop. The Fedora name comes from the fedora hat in the Red Hat logo.
