Release of Mozilla Firefox

2002

Mozilla Firefox is a free and open-source web browser that grew from the Netscape browser code released as open source in 1998. A small team led by Blake Ross and Dave Hyatt began a leaner browser in 2002, first called Phoenix, then Firebird, and eventually renamed Firefox after naming disputes. Version 1.0 appeared in November 2004 and drew millions of users with tabbed browsing, a built-in pop-up blocker and add-on support. Firefox broke the dominance of Microsoft's Internet Explorer and helped revive competition and web standards. Its market share later fell as Google Chrome grew, but it remains a leading independent browser, developed by the Mozilla community and the Mozilla Foundation.
