MediaWiki is free and open-source wiki software, written in the PHP programming language and originally developed for Wikipedia. The first version was introduced in January 2002, when Wikipedia moved away from the earlier wiki script it had used, with a rewrite by Magnus Manske, followed by a further rewrite later in the year by Lee Daniel Crocker. The name MediaWiki was coined in 2003 as a play on Wikimedia, the name of the foundation that runs Wikipedia. The software is distributed under the GNU General Public License and is maintained by the Wikimedia Foundation and a community of volunteers. It stores text in a database, keeps a complete revision history and supports extensions. It is used by thousands of other websites, including corporate knowledge bases and community wikis.
