Release of Tor

20 September 2002

Tor is free software for anonymous communication online, which sends internet traffic through a series of volunteer-run relays so that no single point knows both the user and the destination. The idea of onion routing, which Tor uses, was developed in the 1990s at the United States Naval Research Laboratory. The code was released as free software in the early 2000s, and its main developers included Roger Dingledine and Nick Mathewson. The non-profit Tor Project was established in 2006, and the Tor Browser later made the system easy to use. It is used by journalists, activists and ordinary people who want to avoid censorship and surveillance, but it has also been used for illegal activity.
