The 2019 Indian general election was held in seven phases across the country to elect the members of the 17th Lok Sabha, the lower house of the parliament. It was one of the largest democratic exercises in the world, with hundreds of millions of voters. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, won a larger majority than in 2014, taking 303 seats on its own, and its alliance, the National Democratic Alliance, won more than 350. The Indian National Congress, led by Rahul Gandhi, won only 52 seats and failed again to win enough seats to be recognised as the official opposition. Modi was sworn in for a second term.
