Digital Revolution

c. 1980s

The Digital Revolution is the shift from mechanical and analogue technology to digital electronics, which transformed industry, communication and daily life. Its foundations lay in the invention of the transistor, the integrated circuit and the microprocessor, which allowed computers to become smaller, cheaper and more powerful. Personal computers brought computing to homes and offices in the 1980s, and the spread of the internet and the World Wide Web in the 1990s connected people and information globally. Mobile phones, smartphones, digital media and social networks followed. The change has been compared in importance to the Industrial Revolution, and it is sometimes described as the start of the Information Age, with profound effects on work, privacy and politics.
