Establishment of Lake Malawi National Park

1980

Lake Malawi National Park protects the southern end of Lake Malawi, in Malawi, including a number of islands and the Cape Maclear peninsula. It was one of the first parks in Africa created to protect freshwater life. The lake is famous for the extraordinary variety of its fish, especially cichlids, small colourful species of which hundreds are found nowhere else, and which are often cited by biologists as a spectacular example of rapid evolution. The park also has baboons, hyraxes, fish eagles and monitor lizards. UNESCO listed it as a World Heritage Site in the 1980s. Overfishing and population pressure on the shore are among the threats it faces.
