Publication of The Fellowship of the Ring

29 July 1954

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy epic The Lord of the Rings, published in three parts by Allen and Unwin. Tolkien had begun the story as a sequel to his children's book The Hobbit, but it grew into a much longer and darker tale. In this volume the hobbit Frodo Baggins inherits a ring from his uncle Bilbo and learns that it is the One Ring, forged by the Dark Lord Sauron, and he sets out from the Shire with companions. At Rivendell a Fellowship of nine is formed to destroy the Ring in Mount Doom, and it is broken by the end of the volume. Peter Jackson's film adaptation appeared in 2001.
