François Hollande was born on 12 August 1954 in Rouen. A French politician of the Socialist Party, Hollande was elected president in 2012 by defeating Nicolas Sarkozy, and served one term. He had been the party's first secretary for more than a decade and a long-time member of parliament and mayor of Tulle. His presidency saw the legalisation of same-sex marriage in 2013, the military intervention in Mali, the terrorist attacks in Paris in 2015 and the climate agreement at the Paris conference in the same year. Weak economic growth and low popularity led him not to seek re-election in 2017. Emmanuel Macron, who had been his economy minister, succeeded him.
