Frida Kahlo died on 13 July 1954 in Coyoacán, aged 47. A Mexican painter, Kahlo was born in Coyoacán in Mexico City and as a teenager was badly injured in a bus accident that left her with pain throughout her life. While recovering she began to paint, and she became known for her intense self-portraits, which draw on Mexican folk art and explore identity, the body and suffering. She married the muralist Diego Rivera, with whom she had a turbulent relationship, and she was involved in communist politics. Paintings such as The Two Fridas and The Broken Column are among her best known. She was little known outside Mexico in her lifetime, but she is now an international cultural icon.
