Volodymyr Zelenskyy was born on 25 January 1978 in Kryvyi Rih. A Ukrainian politician and former comedian and actor, Zelenskyy became famous for playing a teacher who unexpectedly becomes president in the television series Servant of the People. He ran for the real presidency in 2019 as a political outsider with an anti-corruption platform, and won in a landslide. After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, he remained in Kyiv and became the leader of the national resistance, appealing to foreign governments and parliaments for military and financial aid. His wartime leadership brought him wide international attention and support, although he has also faced criticism at home.
