Apollo 12 was the second mission to land astronauts on the Moon, launched from Cape Kennedy in Florida in November 1969, four months after Apollo 11. The crew were Charles Pete Conrad, Alan Bean and Richard Gordon, who stayed in lunar orbit while the other two descended. The Saturn V was struck by lightning twice shortly after liftoff, but the crew restored power and continued. Conrad and Bean made a precise landing in the Ocean of Storms, near the unmanned Surveyor 3 probe, and removed parts of it for study back on Earth. They set up scientific instruments, made two moonwalks and returned safely.
