Premiere of Sesame Street

10 November 1969

Sesame Street is an American educational children's television program that premiered on 10 November 1969 on the public broadcaster National Educational Television. It was created by Joan Ganz Cooney and Lloyd Morrisett through the Children's Television Workshop, with the aim of helping preschoolers, especially those from poorer families, prepare for school. The show combined short segments, songs and animation with puppet characters made by Jim Henson, including Big Bird, Kermit the Frog, Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie. It taught letters, numbers and social skills and dealt with themes such as diversity. Sesame Street became one of the longest-running children's programs, shown in many countries with local versions.
