Rise of Red Army Faction

from 1970 to 1998

The Red Army Faction, often called the Baader-Meinhof Group, was a left-wing militant organisation that carried out bombings, bank robberies, kidnappings and assassinations in West Germany. Its leading figures were Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and the journalist Ulrike Meinhof, who rejected what they saw as a state shaped by former Nazis and condemned capitalism and the Vietnam War. The group's activity peaked in the so-called German Autumn of 1977, with the kidnapping and murder of the industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer and the hijacking of a Lufthansa plane. Its leaders died in prison in Stammheim. In 1998 the remaining members announced the group's dissolution.
